Izrael-gyűlölő professzor a CEU-n: nyitott társadalom helyett zártkörű előadás

A Közép-Európai Egyetem (CEU) Budapesten az akadémiai béke szigete. Sőt, több annál: mint az a CEU honlapján olvasható, John Shattuck elnök rektori köszöntőjében az intézményt „a nemzetközi oktatás új modelljének” tekinti, olyan „intellektuális forrásnak, amely segít nyitott, demokratikus, az emberi jogokat tisztelő társadalmakat létrehozni.” Az alapító Soros Györgynek, a nyitott társadalom rendíthetetlen hívének mindig is ugyanez volt a missziója.

A jelek szerint ebbe az egyetem-képbe, a nyitott társadalom eszméjének hirdetésébe belefér az is, hogy június 2-án 14 órakor egy olyan közismert Izrael-gyűlölő, a zsidóellenes erőszakot támogató arab tudós tarthatott előadást a „Palesztinával” való szolidaritásról (értsd az Izrael ellenes egyetemi bojkott-mozgalomról, a BDS-ről) a patinás intézményben, mint Joseph Massad, a Columbia Egyetem modern arab politika professzora. Massad professzort, az „Electronic Intifada” című internetes Izrael-ellenes uszító kiadvány szerzőjét, a zsidóellenes fegyveres erőszak elbagatellizálóját a Társadalmi nemek tanulmánya tanszék vezetője hívta meg Budapestre, az érkezésére a „CEU Students for Justice in Palestine” Facebook-csoport külön eseményt szervezett is szervezett.

Ellenkező tartalmú közlemények, távolságtartó nyilatkozatok híján nem lehet másra gondolni, minthogy a CEU vezetése Massadot is egy demokratikus, az emberi jogokat tisztelő társadalom intellektuális forrásának tartja. Ezt a gyanút támasztja alá, hogy a meghívó  tanszék vezetője kifejezetten ajánlotta a diákoknak az előadás meghallgatását; a Facebook-csoport részéről a CEU egyik tanára is felhívta mindenki figyelmét a részvételre; a CEU szóvivője viszont közvetlenül a rendezvény előtt minden nem CEU-s résztvevőt hazaküldött, mondván, „zártkörű rendezvényről” van szó. Ő tehát az egyetem részéről még az utolsó pillanatban is megvédte a kétséges előadó kétséges előadását. Ráadásul nem is mondott igazat, hiszen az eseményt május 27én a Facebookon mindenki számára elérhető módon hirdették meg.

Az izraeli-palesztin konfliktus ismerői számára Joseph Massad nem ismeretlen értelmiségi. A „cionista gyarmatosító vállalkozás végét” hirdető professzor Izraelt a mai napig „kolonialista, rasszista apartheid-államnak” írja le, megszüntetését a közel-keleti béke fő feltételének látja. Bármiféle béketárgyalást „megalkuvásnak” tart, az Izrael elleni erőszakot legitimálja. Írásaiban, pamfletjeiben gyűlölet kelt a zsidók és a zsidó állam ellen, eleve el sem ismeri a zsidóság jogát a nemzetépítésre, egy önálló állam fenntartására. Mint azt a Vigyázó blog felidézte, írásai „a történelem szemétdombjára került keresztény antijudaizmus tradícióival mutatnak párhuzamot.”

Hangsúlyozni kell, hogy az ő tevékenysége nem az izraeli kormány politikájának bírálatára irányul, amihez természetesen mindenkinek joga van. Még csak nem is Izrael állam törvényeit és működését kritizálja, ami szintén része lehet egy kritikai diskurzusnak. A CEU vendége Izrael eltüntetését tartja kívánatosak.

A Tett és Védelem Alapítvány felháborítónak tartja, hogy a nyitott társadalom eszméjét hirdető alapító által fenntartott neves intézmény nemcsak színpadot biztosított egy zsidó- és Izrael-ellenes előadónak, de magáénak is érzi a rendezvényt. Elkeserítőnek tartjuk, hogy a CEU teret adott a nyitott társadalom eszméjével mind tartalmilag, mind a megrendezés módjában ellentétes, zártkörű (!) Izrael-ellenes előadásnak.

Alapítványunk a CEU vezetésének magyarázatára vár.

Central European University (CEU) in Budapest is an oasis of peaceful academic erudition. Furthermore: in his welcome address on the CEU website, President and Rector John Shattuck considered the institution a “new model for international education” that is “a source of intellectual support for building open and democratic societies that respect human rights.” A mission identical with that of the institution’s founder, György Soros, staunch supporter of an open society.

Apparently this image of the renowned university as well as its declarations upholding the ideal of an open society nevertheless allowed for a lecture on “solidarity with Palestine” (i.e. the anti-Israel Academic Boycott movement, or BDS) to be held on 2 June at 2 p.m. by the Arabian scholar widely known for his hatred of Israel and support for anti-Jewish violence, Professor of modern Arabian politics at Columbia University, Joseph Massad. Professor Massad, author of the inflammatory anti-Israel online publication “Electronic Intifada” who trivializes armed anti-Jewish violence was invited to Budapest by the head of the Department of Gender Studies at CEU, while an event was organized for the occasion of his visit by the Facebook group  “CEU Students for Justice in Palestine”.

Lacking statements from the institution distancing itself from, or denouncing the event, it can only be assumed that the CEU leadership considers Massad an intellectual resource for a democratic society that respects human rights. This suspicion is only confirmed a department head at CEU expressly recommending that students attend the lecture; a member of CEU faculty also called attention to participating in the event on behalf of the Facebook group; while a spokesperson for CEU sent away all those who were not members of CEU and wished to participate, saying it was “not a public event”. Even at the last minute, therefore, a spokesperson for the University defended the dubious lecture given by a dubious lecturer. Moreover the claim about the event being closed to the general public was not true, as the Facebook group advertising it since 27 May is public.

Joseph Massad is an intellectual familiar to those following the Israel-Palestine conflict. Declaring “an end to the Zionist colonialist venture”, the Professor continues to describe Israel as a “colonialist, racist apartheid state”, and sees its liquidation as the main condition for peace in the Middle East. He considers all peace talks “cowardly opportunism” and legitimizes violence against Israel. In his writings and political pamphlets he incites hatred of Jews and the Jewish state, not even conceding Jews the right to build and uphold an independent state. As referenced by the Hungarian blog Vigyázó, his writings “show a parallel with Christian traditions of anti-Judaism that can now be found on the dung heap of history”.

It must be emphasized that his activities do not aim at formulating a critique of Israeli government policies, which of course are within everyone’s rights. In his case however, they do not even represent a criticism of the laws and actions of the State of Israel, which would comprise a part of a critical discourse. This guest of CEU would consider it desirable for Israel to be erased.

Action and Protection Foundation considers it outrageous that not only did the renowned institution, maintained by the generosity of the founder who proclaims the ideal of an open society, provide a platform for the anti-Jewish and anti-Israel speaker, but also considers the event very much its own. We believe it highly distressing that CEU played host to an anti-Israel event that contradicts the ideal of an open society both in terms of its content and form, having been organized as a closed (!) event.

The Foundation expects an explanation from the CEU leadership.
